Why 80% of Apps Lose Users in the First Week, and How to Fix It

User retention is the most important metric most app founders ignore. Here's the onboarding and push notification strategy that keeps users coming back.

Industry data has said it for years: the average app loses the vast majority of its users within days of install. Founders respond by buying more installs, refilling a leaking bucket. Retention is less glamorous than downloads and worth roughly ten times as much. Here's where the first week is won or lost.

The first session has one job

Not registration. Not a permissions barrage. Not a five-screen tour. The first session's only job is to deliver the app's core value once: the first order placed, the first result seen, the first task done. Every screen between install and that moment is where your users evaporate. Count those screens in your app today; each one is a toll gate.

Ask for permissions when they make sense

  • Notification permission asked at install gets refused; asked right after the user does something worth being notified about, it gets granted
  • Location, contacts, camera: same rule: request in context, with the benefit visible
  • Every premature permission dialog is a chance to lose a user you paid for

Push notifications: the retention tool everyone abuses

Notifications are free reach to people who chose you, and most apps burn that privilege on generic blasts within a month. The discipline: every notification must be about the user (their order, their result, their saved item), not about the app. One irrelevant blast costs you silent disables you'll never see in a dashboard.

Measure day 1, day 7, day 30

Retention curves tell you where the product leaks. If day-1 retention is weak, fix onboarding. If day-7 sags, the app lacks a repeat reason. Fix the habit loop before spending another rupee on installs. Growth spend only multiplies what retention has already decided.

Downloads are vanity, retention is sanity, and repeat usage is revenue.
